NCAA Basketball Tournament.........Don't Bet On It!!!!
As you all are probably aware, this week starts the first rounds of the NCAA Div. 1 Basketball tournament. It seems like everyone at Belmont has been talking about who they put down when filling out their brackets and who they think will make it to the championship game. And thanks to our advancing technology, there are plenty of bracket pools that can be filled out online; some just for fun and some for betting. As an NCAA athlete myself, it is illegal for me to enter into any bracket pools for which I could potentially win money. If I did and the athletic department was to find out, I would lose my eligibility to play for the following year. Out of curiosity, I wanted to know if the rest of the student body finds this rule fair. I will also pose one question that suggests an alternative rule: Do you think it should only be illegal for student athletes to bet on their own sport but not on others? What do you think?

And my name is Julie Harmon but I'm just using a blog that I have already created.
I think it would be ok to bet on a sport you are not part of. I'm not really sure how that would hold up. I'm not big into sports but I think that would be fine. I would definitely say it should be illegal to bet on their own sport because you're betting against your competetors and it wouldn't be fair to them, I guess.
I personally don't see why it is such a big deal for student athletes to bet on sporting events. The rules say that if there's an NCAA championship in the sport, a student athlete can't bet on it. That means I can't bet on events such as the Super Bowl. I'd agree that you should be able to bet on the sport you play in AND the school that you play for. Having inside information could cause some people to end up getting upset when they lose. Other than that, there should be no reason why an athlete can't place a wager on a sporting event.
