Now this is something I have never heard of - finding your soul mate on World of Warcraft. The article I found entitled, “It’s Love at First Kill” focuses on some couples who met on World of Warcraft and ended up starting a relationship outside of the fantasy game. Though at first this sounded really crazy to me, it started to make sense after I thought about it for a while. The people who met on this fantasy game obviously already have one thing in common, they like to play online games.
One thing I found very interesting that the article pointed out was that “WOW” has 12 million subscribers and that match.com only has 2 million subscribers. In a way, this simulation game has a much bigger pool of people (though some of them are probably not single) to form and build relationships. Another shocking statistic I found in the article is that, “More than 40% of online gamers are women”. I had no idea that so many women played online games. World of Warcraft seems like a great place for people to meet other gamers.
I know people that have met on match.com and ended up marrying, but I have never heard of people meeting on World of Warcraft. These couples fell in love without talking to the person over the phone, or even seeing their picture. They just saw what the other person created for the computer screen. Though this may seem crazy, after reading this article it seems like gamers meeting other gamers makes sense. It narrows down the “playing field”.
Does anyone think that this might be the way of the future? What do you think about online dating sites? What do you think about building relationships over the internet without even seeing the person in real life?

I believe it happens more often than one would think but at the same time it could end in disaster. You never know who is on the other side and I think WOW has broken up more relationships than built. People have quit their jobs and quit living so that they could play WoW more. Sadly, online dating is becoming the wave of the future because most people can't be bothered to leave their computers.
Actually, my supervisor at work is engaged to a guy she met on WoW. They obviously talked extensively outside of the game and visited in person several times before they decided to get married, but I think it's pretty cool how it's happened with them. There's definitely something to be said about caution with these kinds of things though.
I feel like it's easier to start relationships on a game where (1) it's recreational time, so people are doing something they enjoy, (2) there are many gaming styles that can tell you what a personality is like, (3) you can hear their voice. These are all important things for online dating.... just reading someone's profile and "chatting" online isn't enough to know if you want to date them or not. Not that I've had experience with any of these things, but it seems like those are implications to consider.
I think online dating or interacting on WOW is great if it works for people, but I perfer to meet with people in person. I would rather physically see someone than see a profile pic that never changes and shows their best side. You don't learn a lot about a person by chatting online than by meeting in person.
