Wiretapping: Going Too Far?

Recently, a website called Information Week, which specializes in technology news, reported that the Federal Bureau of Investigation has made attempts to increase their ability to wiretap telephones.

I'm sorry, WHAT?

The article goes on to list several substantial reasons why this is a good thing, it can help us avoid security threats in the future, get us important information more quickly, ect.

However, just the mere fact that the government is now going to be able to listen in on our phone converstations more easily than ever is more than a little alarming to me.

How do you feel about this? Are you concerned as well?
I put the article below so you can read it and form your own opinions.

On one hand this does seem alarming, but when I really think about it I don't think this is such a big deal. Does the government really care about our personal issues? Unless you're doing something illegal or insane, I don't think we have anything to fear.
But still... don't we have a right to privacy? The least they could do is give us papers to sign saying we don't mind them listening in to our conversations. But then again, if they alerted us that they'll be listening in, how would they catch people "red-handed"?

I'm concerned too, Laura! Although I understand the Government's motives, and want for a safer place to live, this does not feel like protection, rather intrusion. It reminds me of 1984.
