New Normal Music

I'm not much of a radio listener. I haven't been for several years now. It has to do with the limited genres available, none of which are exactly what I want to listen to. So if I'm ever driving, I'm almost always listening to my ipod or a cd instead of the radio because if I want music, that's the best means for me. I've pretty much given up on radio. So imagine my surprise when I ran across New Normal Music.

New Normal Music is an internet radio station that plays mostly indie rock that isn't played on normal radio and isn't more than a year old. Created by Tom Leykis, a veteran radio personality who hosts his own shows, and Art Webb in early July, the website boasts of being created "in protest of radio stations who claim to play 'new music' but only offer safe, market tested tunes-- often 10+ years old." Currently, there are no advertisements between songs except for those advertising the station, another difference from normal radio. Which might be why Leykis asks for people to not New Normal Music a radio station, stating that "radio doesn't have the guts to do what we do."

So my question is, yay or nay? Granted, indie rock may not be what you like to listen to. But, in your opinion, is the theory of an internet radio station like this a good one, or should we just stick to the tried and true method of current radio?

I also find that I cannot stand the radio as much as I used to. For one, they play the same "popular" songs a multitude of times in one day that it is enough to drive one crazy. Sure, the song sounded great the first few times but after that, if you hear it again you are quick to change stations. I use my cd player the most so that I can listen to the music I like and will switch back every now and then to the radio in hope that they might actually have something different playing.

Internet radio is interesting to say the least. My friend told me about it and I tried the pandora internet radio. You are able to make your own stations based on a song you like or a band. From there, it finds songs that are similar to it in nature. It was a wonderful tool in finding new (or old) bands that might have been missed. I suppose one reason that the physical radio isn't great anymore is because people are able to bring their ipods to the car or the sirius (and other brands) of internet radio. In all, I would just like to have some music to listen to so I don't fall asleep while driving.

Having recently done a 14 hour drive with only two CD's in my car, and no way of connecting my Ipod to the stereo, I can honestly say at this point in time, I can't stand the radio. Hearing the same songs constantly, especially songs that I was only listening to to pass the time was enough to make insane by the last two hours of my drive.

I personally like the idea of internet radio, especially ones that make a playlist based off of my personal interest. I really like the idea of New Normal Music and how they just play mostly indie rock, but because I listen to other genres of rock music as well, and occasionally other genres in general, I would prefer Pandora. If current radio wasn't so repetitive I would stick to it. However, when I embark on my 14 hour drive back to New York, I will not be turning to the radio.

I can also relate to the frustrations felt when listening to radio. Especially in instances where you listen to a station for an extended period of time, such as a car trip. In these cases, you inevitably hear the same 15 or so songs on loop with commentary by the DJ and advertisements interspersed.

I am currently pursuing an opportunity for an internship at a radio station in my hometown for this summer and look forward to hopefully learning the ins and outs of a modern radio station.

I appreciate the convenience of internet radio because of the ability to customize your station. I am astounded by the technology available that allows a computer to asses the musicality and lyrical content of a song and then match it to other compatible songs. Similarly, when driving in a car, I would also prefer the "genius" playlist feature on my iPod to a radio station.

I used to listen to internet radio before. But i still could never find the type of music I actually wanted to listen to. So, like you, I turned to my ipod and cds. For me it's just easier to know what's being played and I have control over what's being played as well.
However, even listening to the vast expanse of my iTunes library can get old just like the radio. So, where do I turn for new tunes? Well, I check out similar artists on the same label, browse billboard, ask friends. But sometimes these options still don't help out our situation. The idea of having a radio station that legitimately only plays new songs is a brilliant idea. a money maker? probably not. but if you put in new generas and such for these New (insert genera here) Music stations, then it may help us all break out of this pop music only bubble that we're stuck in.

Also, my biggest pet pieve is when you're listening to a station and a song you don't like is on, so you turn it to a different station and that same stupid song is playing, and then you play it again and that Same Song is still playing! what's up with that??

I like using internet radio because it gives me more of a variety to listen to with limited commericials. I like the songs on my iPod but some days I get tired of what I have on it. In order for me to not get too tired of hearing what's on my iPod I use internet radio when I can.
The internet radio brings up a lot of songs that I haven't heard in a while. My favorite internet radio is Yahoo! Music because I can select a genre and it plays a lot of music from such great artists. Everytime I get on it I don't ever hear the same song for the rest of that week or more.
I like that Yahoo! Music gives you a chance to listen to so much music without the annoyance of having to listen to the song over and over and commericals that last longer than the amount of songs played.
The regular radio is sometimes interesting to listen to. Depending on the station, their talk show session is entertaining but over all I perfer internet radio.

I absolutely love the idea of "New Normal Music!" I'm always listening to my ipod in my car, but every once in while I'll forget to bring it along with me. When this happens, I dread turning on the radio. Especially here in Nashville, it seems like every other station is country (no offense to country-it's just not my favorite genre). I get frustrated with the music I hear playing on the radio-so much so, that would rather drive in silence.
I love the idea of being able to see what other kind of music and artist's are out there. There are so many good musicians with amazing music, yet too often go unnoticed because they do not get played on the radio. The fact that there are less commercials is also brilliant.
I will definitely check out this radio station! I'm excited to expand my horizons with the type of music I listen to.

I think that this "new normal music" internet radio station is an awesome idea. I think it gives artists who are not "mainstream" the opportunity to have their songs played even if it has to be done online. I totally agree with the comments about the Radio playing too many of the same, bubble-gum, pop songs over and over and over. While these songs are super catchy, I'm pretty positive that a lot of America would love some real substance on their radio. I myself am a singer, but the things I sing probably wouldn't be played on the radio. New Normal Music gives me a kind of hope that my dream of being heard isn't quite dead just because the people who run the radio stations might lack a little bit of good taste.
