Fox's latest hit television comedy series, Glee, has gained an unbelievable amount of attention. Self-proclaimed "Gleeks" have crowded around television sets once a week (and then over and over again on TiVo) to watch what crazy thing the McKinley High glee club will do next and what song Mercedes will belt out. Even celebrities are getting in on the action - Josh Groban and Kristin Chenoweth have both guest starred. So what is so special about this show? Is it the clever advertising - Fox premiered the first episode a few months before releasing the rest of the season, the over-the-top characters, or the fact that a Broadway/Pop mix show has finally captured a prime time spot? What do you like about it?
As a former theater kid myself, I love it for the theater aspect and because I have met those type of characters in my life. I've listened to Lea Michele since she was in Spring Awakening on Broadway, and I've loved every movie Jane Lynch has been in (which is just about all of them).
However, the advertising aspect cannot be undermined. First Fox blew everyone away with the pilot and then made us all wait for the rest of the season, and now they've created a nation-wide search for the next Glee cast member. It was an online audition where anyone could make a video and the top 500 fan favorites were picked. From there, 50 got to go to Cincinnatti and audition to be in the top 10. This process received the talents of several Belmont students, and one even made it as an alternate to the top 10. I think it was a brilliant idea for Fox, because even while Glee is not yet airing (April 13th can't come fast enough), it's gaining attention and recognition right at the time it's about to come back.
So what do you think? Will you be watching April 13th, or will you be doing homework and making fun of all the Glee-ful Facebook status updates? I know I'll be there watching and quoting with the best of them!

When Glee was first being advertised I thought there was absolutely no way that it would make it past its first season. I was in show choir back in high school, so I knew I would enjoy it, but I didn't it would catch on past that small performing arts crowd. I was so surprised/pleased to find out that I was wrong. It is such a such a feel good show. You cant walk away from it in a bad mood. I think that their unique advertising strategy brought in the audience curious to see what all the hype was about, but after watching one episode everyone is hooked. I will definitely be tuning in on the 13th along with millions of others
I was something close to a theater kid in high school for a little while, and while I haven't been watching Glee, I can see why so many people love it. I really think this is one step closer to making musicals socially relevant again, and soon we'll see even more things like this. I've always loved musicals, and while I'll probably like Glee, I'm not sure I can afford that kind of addiction right now. But this show's gonna be around for a loooong time, and the kids on it will probably be in more musicals or musical-esque TV and movies.
I don't watch glee so I don't get what the whole hype is about and i am a theater geek myself...
but...
did y'all know that last weekend (on sat.) they had open auditions for the new season of glee in memphis?
y'all should've gone...
I watched it. I think its a great show and definitely something new. Most of the character's are great singers and the story line isn't too bad. I hope it lasts a while!
I watch it every now and then. I think it's a good show, it's something different.
