Coupons Offering More Than Just Discounts
There are apparently news kinds of coupons - coupons that are packed with customer information - that are being used now. These coupons look like regular coupons that you just print right off your computer, but their bar codes can contain insane amounts of information such as identifying information, internet address, facebook info., and even search terms about how the customer was able to find the coupon. These types of coupons let retailers figure out which ads are working the best, what shoppers pay attention to, and what they ignore. Not in all cases, but in some, the coupons can identify an exact person - not just an anonymous shopper. How do you feel about these coupons? Do you feel like this is kind of an invasion of privacy?

After I first read this, I thought it was a huge invasion of privacy. But the more I think about it, the less I think it is. This is just me, but I am fine with these coupons letting retailers figure out which ads are working the best, what shoppers pay attention to, and what they ignore. While the Facebook info could be a little too much, I think the bar codes that contain email addresses and where the customer was able to find the coupon are o.k. As long as these coupons don't go overboard, I think this it is a good thing for the consumer and the producer.
I completely agree. I feel like it is a little intense, but it is a great idea. Retailers will greatly benefit from being able to use this information, and consumers will also benefit when they are targeted for the products they use.
I actually don't mind this or feel like it's invading privacy. I like the idea and am curious to see what else this leads to.
