Plastic Surgery for Teens

http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/36101073/ns/today-parenting_and_family/

Dr. Sam Rizk argues that, "It’s no different than kids getting braces for crooked teeth.” I can see the option of plastic surgery being reasonable for a teen if they had some type of physical deformity but in most cases I would feel like it would be wrong to alter your body in that way at such a young age. What do you think?

um... plastic surgery for children! like under 18... no no no... i dont think so... not unless you like broke your nose and it was going to beneficial to helping you breath better... or if it was some form of physical deformity that you were born with okay...
but like... just so you can look better or something... no no no... thats weird...
i dont think that that is anything like getting braces...
my dad got braces because some of his teeth were pushing his other teeth and it was painful and he couldnt chew properly and he often times found himself choking so... i just... no!
no plastic surgery for kids!
look at heidi montag y'all!
THE GIRL IS BROKE!

Unless plastic surgery is being used for a child with a physical deformity or in a life threatening circumstance, etc., I think that it is an awful decision. I am no doctor, but I disagree strongly with what Dr. Sam Rizk said. Braces are used for kids who would have major problems with their teeth if they did not have braces. Maybe my view is skewered because I see no reason to get plastic surgery (except in extreme circumstances). But to change the body makeup of a child at a young age before they are fulling grown just sounds like a dangerous, regrettable, and an immature mistake.

Yeah, this is not ok at first glance. i don't know these kids, and i don't know how badly these things were effecting their lives, but i know that they are not the first kids to have a big nose/ears. I sort of see how the girls boobs might have caused a problem for her back, but otherwise, getting braces to fixed crooked teeth and getting a nose job are two different things.

Physically and psychologically, it is not suitable for kids to go under plastic surgery procedures for beauty purposes.
What about their self-esteem and confidence?
How would plastic surgery teach kids about being themselves and accepting them for who they are?

I agree that its wrong to alter your body at such a young age. I definitely think there are acceptions to this though. If teens have a nose thats been broken muliple times and is completly crooked of if they have ears that look like Mickey Mouse's that need to be pinned back, then I find that ok. Teens can be pretty harsh these days, so if there is something that you could fix that would keep the criticizing down to a minimum, then I see that as acceptable. I don't find breast augmentation or liposuction or anything like this acceptable for teens. If teens are wanting surgeries like this done, then to me, that shows their focus isn't in the right place. If they are staying active and focusing on school/career then they shouldn't have time to consume themselves with what cup size they are or how much they weigh.

as a hockey player, i would probably consider fixin my slightly crooked nose from hockey if i could afford it, so i agree that plastic surgery for kids should only be used when something abnormal needs to be fixed. but when it comes to simply getting the surgery in terms of simply wanting to look better, i really dont think it is necessary. although, as a Canadian, i am a big Pam Anderson fan, so maybe i should bite my tongue...

I don't think plastic surgery to vainly alter your appearance at such a young age is ok. It's fine if the surgery will improve a severe deformity or a health problem. Plus, at such a young age, their bodies are not fulling done maturing.

Comparing plastic surgery to braces is ridiculous. Dr. Rizk is obviously forgetting the fact that braces are used for health concerns. The straighter your teeth, the less likely cavities are, the healthier your mouth. However, plastic surgery done for merely cosmetic reasons on minors would be better compared to getting a tattoo. If minors can get plastic surgery, don't you think they should be able to get whatever tattoo they want to? The whole point of plastic surgery is to morph your body into something else, typically something more appealing. The whole point of tattooing is to decorate your body, and in the eyes of the person getting the tattoo, making their body more appealing. The reason minors are not allowed to do these things without parent permission is because these are permanent changes you are doing to your body and are not things to be taken lightly. I see this as a sign of how our society has become overly obsessed with image and beauty.

Really? No. I don't see how they can compare plastic surgery to braces. There's a big difference. Everybody has a certain part of their body that they probably don't like or wish they could change, but that doesn't mean we go out and get plastic surgery. There are some cases where plastic surgery may be needed, but I don't think it should be as common as braces.

This is so disgusting! Kid's bodies havent even had time to grow and mature yet!! I read an article the other day online about a new "sweet sixteen gift craze"... a new pair of boobs for a young girl's sweet fifteen (quinceanera) or sweet sixteen. I am seriously so disgusted! It's understandable if it's to fix something that is seriously harming a child's health, like nose surgery for a deviated septum or lapband or lipsuction that can help cure diabetes in overweight people. It's a hard thing to decide what's reasonable and what isn't.
