A growing number of kids, who have not even hit their teenage years yet, are using social networks such as facebook and myspace. Some scientists worry that pre-adolescent use of the sites, which some therapists have linked to Internet addiction among adults, could be damaging to children's relationships and brains. Do you think more should be done to keep these young children off these sites or does it not matter?

Yes! I joined Myspace when I was in eighth grade or something like that, and now that would be way later than most kids at that age. I feel totally enslaved to Facebook now, and originally it was not open to high school students. I think it's a good idea to keep social networking at some kind of age limit like that so that when you do get to be of age...the addiction process is prolonged..? I mean, I really don't think getting one at a later age (meaning 18) will keep you from becoming any less addicted than having one since you were 13....but at least it's an idea.
Yes! I feel like I was saved from the internet addiction. Granted, I basically live on the internet, but it's on sites that are good to spend my time. I feel like kids at a young age will become too addicted to the wrong sites, such as social networking and game sites. I don't see a way that usage can be regulated. It is in the control of the parents at the moment. Parents need to monitor their children's usage of the internet. My dad only allowed me to be online for 20 minutes a day until I was 15. There is no reason for kids to be online at such a young age.
I think that Facebook can be a very harmful tool when misused by anyone, but is especially dangerous for these younger kids. They have fewer commitments so they have more time to sit and fixate on social networking sites. Facebook is positive when people use it to stay connected to their friends or relatives, but many use it as a way to publicly harm others. Social networking is a perfect way for adolescents to do this as most of their parents will not monitor what they are doing on their pages. It is also easier for adolescents to harm others through social networking because it does not involve any face to face communication. Aside from the harm adolescents can do to one another on these sites, they can also be targeted by internet predators. These children do not need to get addicted to the internet this early on and are not emotionally or mentally equipped to deal with the negative effects that arise from usage.
i think there should be a stricter age limit on these social networkin sites. I didnt get a facebook page until the end of my senior year in high school but I dont feel like i missed out anything. I was probably better off when I wasnt on facebook because now everytime I open my computer to do homework or anything else I find myself going on facebook. It's so addicting and I dont think its something younger children should be able to have access to.
