Toshiba Creates Instant Translation Software
Toshiba recently showcased a new application for Windows Mobile that will instantly translate Japanese speech into English and vice-versa. As technology for this keeps improving and languages keep getting added, I believe it will become very popular for tourists all over the world. I think they might also incorporate this kind of software into a program like Skype eventually, so that you can talk to friends and business associates all over the world. What do you think are some other uses for this type of technology?

I can see a lot of use for this product in the business world and in the workplace. I do think that if you are going to be in a business position where knowing other languages is helpful, you should learn them yourself. This is convenient, but I see it being a crutch if relied on too much. It does make a lot of sense for tourists...but imagining it actually being used seems silly to me. Having a language translator integrated into programs like Skype does not seem very far-fetched to me at all though..
This is AWESOME! I think it will become an iPhone app and soon no one will really need to take the time to learn other languages because they will just be able to scan the document or record the coversation and listen to it in their native language. I think this could make the world more united, less dangerous and more explorable and trade savvy.
I definitely think that this will be useful if you're planning on going to another country, but I have a feeling that if it was used in the business world it wouldn't be as realistic. You could say that it would eliminate the need to learn a language, but then again there are several notable dialects in every language. This device might act in a similar way as voice activated devices on phones, where they have trouble understanding you even if you speak really clearly. If you use one of these in a normal conversation, the device might not be able to pick up enough of what the other person was saying to make it useful.
I think this device will definitely be helpful in the business world, but soon people will just think they don't need to learn other languages. I think that if you're in that position, you should really learn the language and show that you respect their country. I think for tourists, this will definitely catch on. This can help eliminate those language barriers while you're on your trip, helping to make it more enjoyable.
I think that this is the start of a whole line of advances. For business purposes this seems like it could be very handy. soon it could replace the actual role or position of a human translator, then, who knows maybe we'll end have devices in our phones that will automatically translate so its like were not even talking in different languages.
